CONTRASTS OF PLACE

Two people could be having the most fascinating discussion about military strategy in the Iraq war, but that is just two people talking; it isn’t a play. We might listen to the discussion with intellectual interest but a drama has to provoke our emotional interest and our curiosity. There is no sense of what is going to happen next in even the most vibrant discussions.

The minute you feel your characters have settled into a mere discussion, interrupt them with a new character coming into the room, a change of scene or a new physical problem they have to solve.

If you feel the characters started discussing something important that needs to be elucidated further, make room for the end of the discussion later. If the discussion starts in a war zone, have it conclude in a bar or vice versa. Doing this, the way they discuss the topic will change too. It can shift from fevered to considered. It could become ironic.

As a rule of thumb characters should discuss war in a bar and types of beer in a war. The scene will always be livelier if the words and atmosphere don’t match.
